The official music videos for Morning Musume's new double A-side single "Wagamama Ki no Ai no Joke/Ai no Gundan" have been released!
I really like the new songs and the music videos for these singles are a big improvement on their other recent videos. Continuing with their new electro-dubstep inspired sound, the new singles are even more catchy and the group now seems comfortable with this kind of "cool" persona.
"Wagamama Ki no Ai no Joke" is a very fast-paced and energetic dance number with unusual electro-dubstep breaks and chanting. I especially like the music video, in my opinion it's a massive improvement for the group.
The variety of camera shots goes with the energetic feeling of the song, and the small-group shots of the members are really fun and showcase the personality of the new Morning Musume. Ikuta and Suzuki really stood-out to me in these shots - they are a great opportunity to show-off all of the members. The stage shots also are in keeping with the group's new cool image. The dance shots do not disappoint - I love the dance-battle feel to the choreography!
I'm pleased that there are 2 different costumes for this music video - the monochrome dresses look striking in the dance shots and the black-pants outfits give an edgier look that I haven't really seen on the group before.
Leader Michishige Sayumi really stood-out in this video as a much more confident and powerful character, and as the senior member she stands-out as the beauty character of the group.
"Ai no Gundan" is also an exceptionally edgy and energetic song! The electro-saxophone instrumentals are extremely catchy and the robotic-dubstep interval after the chorus adds another dimension of edgy-coolness. The fast-paced and high-quality choreography also showcases the youthfulness of the current line-up.
Again, I am really pleased with the effort that has gone into increasing the quality of the music video for this side of the single. The woodland backdrop is cute and quirky, although overall there is a good balance of dance-shots and the cute/calm scenes with the members dressed in white! As in "Wagamama Ki no Ai no Joke", there are two different costumes in the video - the red and black military style costumes and also simple white dresses for the pretty small-group scenes. I love the variety of the red and black military costumes - the different styles suit the individual members and help them to stand out. Newest member, Oda Sakura, has shown massive improvement and appears to be on the same level of talent as the older members! I think that Morning Musume ace, Sayashi Riho, really shone in this video alongside 10th generation's dance-machine Ishida Ayumi.
Being the first single release since Tanaka Reina's graduation, it's been interesting to see how the music would change and how the song lines would be distributed. It's nice to see there's a fairly even distribution of lines for the new songs, as it's a good opportunity to showcase the new line-up. Morning Musume is going from strength to strength.
